At the University of Washington Tacoma, we believe that student success is the ultimate goal of our academic programs. We aim to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their backgrounds, and to provide them with the tools they need to succeed in their studies and in their future careers.

To that end, we have developed a set of student guidelines that we believe will help our students make the most of their time here at the University of Washington Tacoma. These guidelines cover everything from academic expectations to campus safety to mental health and wellness.

Academic Expectations

As a student at the University of Washington Tacoma, you are expected to maintain a high level of academic achievement. This means attending all of your classes, participating actively in class discussions and assignments, and completing your assignments on time.

In addition to academic performance, we also expect our students to conduct themselves with honesty and integrity in all of their academic work. This means avoiding plagiarism, cheating, or any other form of academic dishonesty.

Campus Safety

At the University of Washington Tacoma, we take campus safety very seriously. We have implemented a number of measures to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, including 24-hour security patrols, emergency response plans, and regular safety drills.

However, we also believe that safety is a shared responsibility, and we encourage all members of our community to be vigilant and to report any safety concerns they may have.

Mental Health and Wellness

We understand that college can be a stressful and challenging time for many students, and we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellness of our students. We offer a range of resources and services to help our students manage stress and cope with the demands of college life.

These resources include counseling services, support groups, wellness workshops, and mindfulness programs. We also encourage our students to take care of their physical health by staying active, eating well, and getting enough rest.

Making the Most of Your Time at UW Tacoma

In addition to following the student guidelines outlined above, there are several other steps you can take to make the most of your time at UW Tacoma.

Get Involved on Campus

One of the best ways to enhance your college experience is to get involved on campus. Whether you join a student organization, participate in a volunteer project, or attend a campus event, there are countless opportunities to connect with other students and become an active member of the UW Tacoma community.

Network with Faculty and Staff

Another way to make the most of your time at UW Tacoma is to build relationships with your professors and other members of the faculty and staff. Not only can they offer valuable guidance and support as you navigate your academic program, but they can also provide valuable insights and connections that may benefit you in your future career.

Take Advantage of Career Services

UW Tacoma offers a range of career services to help students explore career options, build job-search skills, and connect with potential employers. Whether you are looking for an internship, seeking advice on your resume and cover letter, or preparing for a job interview, the Career Development Center can help.

Extracurricular Activities at UWT

Getting involved in extracurricular activities is a great way to meet new people, develop leadership skills, and explore your interests outside of the classroom. UWT offers a wide range of clubs and organizations, including cultural and diversity organizations, academic and professional organizations, and special interest clubs.

For example, the Black Student Union is a student-led organization that focuses on promoting black culture and community on campus. The Environmental Club is a group of students who are passionate about sustainability and environmental issues.

These clubs and organizations provide opportunities for students to connect with others who share similar interests and passions.

UWT also hosts a number of campus events throughout the year, such as concerts, movie screenings, and guest lectures. These events provide opportunities to learn about new topics, hear from experts in various fields, and engage with the campus community.

When it comes to academics, UWT has a strong focus on interdisciplinary learning, which means that you'll have the opportunity to explore multiple fields of study and make connections between them. For example, if you're interested in environmental science, you could take courses in biology, chemistry, and geography, and then apply that knowledge to real-world problems through research projects and internships.

To succeed academically at UWT, it's important to prioritize your studies and manage your time effectively. This means attending all of your classes, participating in discussions, and completing assignments on time.

You can also take advantage of UWT's many academic support services, such as tutoring and writing centers, study groups, and academic advisors.

In addition to academic support, UWT's Career Development Center (CDC) offers a range of services to help students achieve their career goals. From resume writing and job search strategies to mock interviews and networking events, the CDC is committed to helping students succeed in their professional lives.

You can also explore internship and job opportunities through Handshake, UWT's online job board.

But college isn't just about academics and career preparation - it's also about finding your community and pursuing your passions. UWT offers a variety of extracurricular activities to help students get involved on campus and build a sense of community.

Join a student club or organization, attend campus events, or participate in intramural sports. You can also volunteer through UWT's Center for Service and Leadership, which connects students with community organizations in the Tacoma area.

When it comes to housing, UWT does not have on-campus housing, but there are several off-campus housing options available for students. The university's website provides a list of recommended housing options, including apartments, townhouses, and homestays.

When searching for housing, be sure to consider factors such as location, price, amenities, and safety.

Career Services at UWT

The Career Development Center (CDC) at UWT is an invaluable resource for students looking to explore career options, gain work experience, and develop professional skills. The CDC offers a range of services, including one-on-one career counseling, resume and cover letter reviews, job search strategies, and career fairs and networking events.

In addition, the CDC offers a number of career-related workshops and classes, such as interview preparation and salary negotiation.

One unique aspect of the CDC is its focus on experiential learning. The center offers a number of internship and co-op opportunities that allow students to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field while earning academic credit.

These experiences can be an excellent way to build your resume and make connections in your field of interest.
