Cool, calm and sophisticated with a youthful edge, the city of East Hollywood is tucked between the busy central Los Angeles neighborhoods of Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, and Koreatown— the diverse and steadily growing community of East Hollywood. In the early 20th century, the East Hollywood area was a farming village that also encompassed some of what is now Los Feliz. Parts of the neighborhood were formerly known as "Prospect Park." East Hollywood is bounded by Western Avenue on the west, Hollywood Boulevard on the north, Hoover Street on the east and the Hollywood Freeway on the south. It contains the following communities: Thai Town, Hollymont Junction, Hollyset Junction, Little Armenia West, College Village and Virgil Village.
It also borders Los Feliz to the north and Silver Lake, about four miles from Downtown Los Angeles to the east. It also borders Wilshire Center to the south and Hollywood on the west.
In the past, due to the area’s lack of walkability and parking, many LA residents would simply drive through this neighborhood on their way to other destinations. However, now, East Hollywood is a cultural hotspot for small business entrepreneurs, diverse mom-and-pop restaurants, and colorful street art. East Hollywood is served by the Metro Line subway which runs north-south along Vermont Avenue and east-west along Hollywood Boulevard.
More than a dozen bus lines run on the major service lines which give access to all surrounding areas such as Hollywood and the Griffith Observatory. East Hollywood’s neighborhood is also very pedestrian-friendly with a lot of attractions close to East Hollywood apartments.
With easy access to the 101 freeway, residents in East Hollywood can travel to other parts of Los Angeles and even other counties such as San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley without much of a problem. While Downtown Los Angeles is a twenty-minute drive heading east, Beverly Hills and other westside neighborhoods are a twenty-minute drive heading west. East Hollywood offers residents convenient access to many of LA’s most popular neighborhoods, and it’s close to tourist attractions such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Griffith Observatory, and even The Grove.
It’s no wonder why East Hollywood is so popular among professionals who like being in the middle of all the action.
Many parts of East Hollywood are still developing, and because the neighborhood is always transitioning, there are several pockets with very affordable housing options. Home prices get higher heading towards neighborhood borders near Silver Lake and Los Feliz. While most of the inventory in East Hollywood is dedicated to apartment rentals, there are homes for purchase in the area. These homes come in a wide variety of styles and sizes.
Many young professionals will find it very easy to thrive in the area because of the way the housing market is setup in different areas. Students in the area also have a chance to thrive while living in East Hollywood as apartment rental prices are set to accommodate even the tightest budget. Even with affordable rent, East Hollywood does not lack on amenities within housing communities.
Home to Los Angeles’ quaint Thai Town and Little Armenia, East Hollywood features some of the city’s most diverse dining options. East Hollywood has emerged as the city’s “hottest dining hood.” Although Middle Eastern, Armenian, Filipino, and Mexican cuisine have been mainstay dining options in the community, new breakfast joints, burger spots, and coffee shops have popped up in recent years—attracting more young residents to the area.
An equal mix of hyped hotspots attracting visitors far and wide and local institutions that have help shape the neighborhood, East Hollywood is the place for those who want a neighborhood atmosphere with the big city at arms’ length. Family-owned bars like Tiki-Ti, hotspots like Sqirl, and corner shop coffee house Cafecito Organico lend a more neighborly feel to East Hollywood, but the glitz and glimmer of Los Angeles is still ever-present in this historic neighborhood. Multicultural and family-oriented, East Hollywood is a great place to spend a year or a lifetime.
One of East Hollywood’s main draws when it comes to recreational areas is the Barnsdall Art Park, which is home to the landmarked Hollyhock House, designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. In fact, the park itself is actually a historic and cultural monument. Situated at the peak of Olive Hill, Barnsdall Art Park overlooks the city of Los Angeles as well as parts of Hollywood Hills and Griffith Park.
Aline Barnsdall, a native of Bradford, Pennsylvania and heiress to an oil fortune, was led by her interest in the future of the American stage to Chicago, Illinois, where she co-directed an experimental theatre company. While in Chicago, she met the equally unconventional Frank Lloyd Wright, who recently completed Midway Gardens she admired. A trip to California turned Barnsdall's attention to Los Angeles. She commissioned Wright to help her develop an innovative theatrical community on the nation's western cultural frontier.
Selecting a thirty-six acre site in East Hollywood known as Olive Hill, Barnsdall and Wright worked together to develop a plan that included a home for Barnsdall and her young daughter, two secondary residences, a theater, a director's house, a dormitory for actors, studios for artists, shops, and a motion picture theater. The site plan was based on the gridded spacing of the existing olive grove’s 1225 trees.
In subsequent decades, the park has become popular among residents from the nearby districts.
The park has a wide variety of park visitors, as it sits at the intersection of a number of Los Angeles demographic groups. The park is also home to a theater, art gallery, and several studios. The spirit of Barnsdall's intention was to maintain an active arts center for the community was assured longevity.
Programs and exhibits became a part of the mission of the park programs that are used by thousands of Los Angeles community members as well as visitors from throughout the world. The Community Arts Division of the Cultural Affairs Department manages the park. Programs include the adult and youth art classes at the Barnsdall Art Center and the Junior Arts Center, the Barnsdall Art Center and the Hollyhock House; museum education and tours programs at the Municipal Art Gallery, the Junior Arts Center Gallery and the Hollyhock House; theatre programs at the Gallery Theatre; and, numerous festivals during the year that celebrate the cultural diversity of the community.
The Barnsdall Gallery Theatre is owned and operated by Performing Arts in the City of Los Angeles's Department of Cultural Affairs. It is a 299-seat proscenium space rented at nominal fees to individuals and organizations for live theatre, dance, music, spoken word, lectures, films, and other events. Barnsdale Gallery Theatre also presents a variety of community events in the space, including free programs, such as the Independent Shakespeare Company, Music Summer Camps by the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, and many annual festivals, including the Thai Festival and Artwallah.
The Barnsdall Art Center provides college-level art instruction at low cost in a Frank Lloyd Wright building. The center is temporarily housed in the Junior Arts Center due to the closure of the Frank Lloyd Wright building for safety reasons. The Barnsdall Art Center Student Advisory Committee provides support and student influence for the center's growth.
The non-profit organization provides volunteer services with registration and financial assistance by covering programs and classes that the City is unable to fund.
